Where Do You Stay?

It's time for another Southern cultural expression lesson!

What do you think when you hear the question, "Where do you stay?"

  1. The thought is incomplete. You need more information, such as, "Where do you stay when you go on vacation to Gulf Shores?"
  2. The person is asking, "Where do you live?"
  3. It's a political question. The person wants to know your opinion on a certain issue.

The correct answer is 2, or at least that's what I've gathered it means in Memphis.

I was reminded of this phrase the other day when I was at Kroger. The checker was telling me a story about some twins she knows (because, you know, I want to hear everyone's twin stories all the time...). She mentioned that she stays in a townhouse - this was relevant information as the twins try to push each other down the stairs, apparently.

Then I remembered that last year, when we were car shopping, a sales guy asked us, "Where do you stay?" We were a little confused by the question. What he really wanted to know was what state we lived in for vehicle tax and registration purposes (Memphis is right on the border of TN/MS/AR).

In both of these examples, the speakers were African-American. According to the internet, this expression is more common in Black communities. Well, and also in Scotland. Interesting!

10 months

The latest from baby-ville, in honor of their 10 month birthday. They are almost at the 8 month "adjusted" mark. I try not to compare them too much to other babies, though it's hard!

Moving
B has mastered the army crawl. He thinks it's cool to drag himself across the floor to knock down towers of blocks I build for him. When A is on his stomach, will sort of wiggle forward about a foot, but he still prefers rolling as his means of transportation. I've seen both of them get up on their hands and knees briefly.

They will both sit up for a minute or two, but then they flop backwards dramatically, so I can't leave them sitting unattended.

Eating
We've fed them all sorts of new foods. One that they both hated was ground turkey. Not sure if it was a texture or flavor thing, but it was definitely not a winner! Ok, good thing I only cooked about a cup of it for them. They both love yogurt, and they're pretty fond of all fruits so far. A will eat most vegetables. B acts like I'm trying to poison him with green foods, though I can usually convince him to eat a few bites.

The pediatrician told me to let them try more finger foods. They are both figuring out the "pincer" grasp (using thumb + finger) to pick up small items like Cheerios. But, they prefer it when I feed them from a spoon. That's fine with me because then they actually eat a bit, rather than just smooshing food everywhere.

Perhaps this is where I should note that A has 2 teeth and B has 1. It's a quick way to tell them apart now if I get them mixed up :)

Talking/Making Noise
They love to giggle, laugh, sing, and make sound effects. Neither of them make any noises that resemble words. A recently figured out how to click his tongue, so now he does that non-stop.

Making Friends
They've gone to the church nursery three times now! I'm not sure if they've made any baby friends yet, but the nursery workers seem to like them, ha ha. Both A and B are starting to exhibit stranger anxiety. I have never seen them look so scared/sad! Their little lips start to quiver and they cry huge tears. Ack! I mean, it makes me feel special that they are so attached to me, but I also want them to be able to experience their own lives. Hopefully they will get more social with time.

Brain Development
Not sure if this is the right category, but just in the last couple weeks I have noticed that they actually seem to pay attention when I'm reading them a story. Before, they did not really look at the book. Instead, they tried to yank out each other's pacifiers or fling themselves off my lap. But now they will sit and look at the pictures while I read. Wow! I wonder if they are starting to process language differently or something.

Finally, here's a sufficiently anonymous picture that I don't mind posting it for the world to see :) This is one of A's favorite activities - pulling the linens off the changing table shelves and wrapping himself up like a mummy. It might be time for a new storage system...

Life in Pictures, Briefly

This blog is going to function as something of a baby book for the boys, assuming "the internet" still exits when they are grown up. Maybe I can download the data and store it on a brain memory chip for them or something...

(Pardon the strange angle on some of these pictures - I can't figure out how to rotate in Blogger and don't have time to mess with them in another application right now.)

Things that are tasty and we like to chew on

Socks! Our toes are always cold because we yank off our socks to chew on them the second Mom puts them on our feet.

Toes! Especially if the toes belong to my brother!

Burp rags, especially the tags!

Teething rings, amazingly enough - something actually designed to be chewed :)

Mom's hair! Whenever she doesn't have it pulled back, we get so excited and can't wait to shove big handfuls in our mouths!

Things that are hilarious
Things that crinkle, like this book. It's extra funny if my brother is waving/flapping it around!

Items that Mom or Dad drop on us, like this soft block. Bonus funny points if Mom plays volleyball with the block and says "bump, set, spike!"

Anything that falls on the floor, like these blocks when Mom tries to juggle!

This rattle, when we use it to whack things or if Mom taps our feet with it. It is super hilarious right before bedtime when we are getting sleepy :)
